Roman sites in our region

(1) EPFACH / ABODIACUM 
Early military base on the Lorenzberg (approx. 14 BC) to protect the crossroads of the Via Claudia with the road Bregenz / Salzburg and the bridges over the river Lech. The settlement Abodiacum remained in existence up to the end of the Roman occupation.

(2) ALTENSTADT / RECONSTRUCTION OF THE VIA CLAUDIA AUGUSTA 
In the present village of Altenstadt (which used to be the old town of Schongau), a Roman presence is proved to have existed from the 1st to the 4th centuries. At the monument to the Via Claudia, a part of the Roman Road has been reconstructed.

(3) SCHONGAU / TOWN MUSEUM 
The archaeological section of the museum dealing with the history of the region offers an overview of the archaeological remains found in the Schongau area and shows original finds from excavations covering the whole period from prehistory to modern times.

(4) PEITING / VILLA RUSTICA
In one of the largest villas in Rhaetia (2nd to 4th century.) a rare love spell was discovered, scratched into a lead block. A protective glass building provides a view of the bath house. There is also a Roman kitchen and herb garden.

(5) MARKTOBERDORF / KOHLHUNDEN / ROMAN BATH HOUSE
In the protective glass building are the foundations of the bath house, an important example of sacrificial pottery and other exhibits. The bath belonged to the largest Villa Rustica in the Allgäu region. A model in the tower shows details of Roman agriculture activity

(6) BERNBEUREN / DAMASIA / AUERBERG MUSEUM
On the Auerberg is the earliest town-like Roman settlement in Bavaria (12 to approx 45 AD) with a 3 km long protective mound. The Auerberg museum in Bernbeuren provides information about the Roman settlement. The Via Damasia information walk takes visitors from the village to the Auerberg.

(7) SCHWANGAU / VILLA RUSTICA
The thermal baths (approx. 150 AD) were decorated with numerous frescoes which count among the most beautiful examples north of the Alps. The bath house and a work room are in a protective building which can be visited any time.
